A LITTLE CONTEXT HELPS

The 9–1 scale,
made simple.

9 is the highest grade. The number of marks needed changes with the subject, exam board and exam series.

4

Standard pass

Grade 4 is the standard pass threshold. Check the exact entry requirements for your next course.

5

Strong pass

Grade 5 is described as a strong pass in English and maths for school accountability.

9

Highest grade

The top of the 9–1 scale. There isn’t a fixed percentage that earns a 9 in every exam.

Good questions. Clear answers.

Are these my official GCSE grades?

No. This calculator compares your marks with published boundaries. Practice and mock results are estimates; only your exam board can issue your official result.

Can I use just one paper?

Qualification boundaries apply to your total across all required assessments. Don’t compare one paper with the total. Individual paper boundaries are notional and do not award an official subject grade.

Will next year’s boundaries be the same?

Boundaries are set after exams have been marked and can change each year. These June 2026 boundaries help you review practice papers; they cannot predict future boundaries.

What does U mean?

Foundation tiers offer grades up to 5 (5–5 for Combined Science); Higher tiers have a restricted grade range. U means unclassified: the total falls below the lowest available grade boundary for that qualification and tier.

Built on published boundaries.

Selected maths, English, science, business and computer science qualifications on England’s 9–1 scale. Choose your exact specification; other subjects and exam series are not yet included. Data checked 6 October 2026. Independent of the exam boards and Ofqual.
